Our Company

The NutrOcean company was formed by Valeo Mangement L.P., a limited partnership responsible for the commercialization of technological innovations developed by institutions in the University of Quebec network. In 2002, Valeo Management undertook the commercialization of the technologies used in the production and concentration of marine microalgae developed at the Institut des sciences de la mer at the University of Quebec in Rimouski (UQAR-ISMER).

In light of the commercial potential resulting from these first efforts, NutrOcean Inc. was established in 2005, persuant to the Canadian Business Corporations Act, and began operations in January 2007. NutrOcean is a private company held by Rival, a limited partnership of UQAR, its officers and private funds: the Fonds de soutien Bas-Saint-Laurent and the Société de développement de l’industrie maricole (SODIM, society for the development of the marine farming industry).

NutrOcean is a marine farming production company located in Rimouski, on the shores of the Saint Lawrence estuary. Starting with seawater drawn from deep in the estuary, NutrOcean uses clean technology that allows it to supply customers with contaminant-free microalgae products with no added chemical products. Microalgae are natural and organic, and their production has no negative effects on the environment.

NutrOcean’s seawater supply is provided by the UQAR-ISMER marine station. This facility is constantly monitored and makes it possible to draw high-quality seawater from a depth of 12 metres almost one kilometre offshore. NutrOcean then uses ultrafiltration technology to remove all suspended material and the associated contaminants. This makes it possible to produce microalgae in very clean, high-quality seawater. Microalgae production takes place in a new factory under hermetic conditions, free from any contamination. Production is painstakingly controlled in order to supply consistent products that meet the strictest quality requirements.

NutrOcean uses exclusive technology developed at the Institut des sciences de la mer (marine sciences institute) of the University of Quebec at Rimouski (UQAR-ISMER). The technology is protected by two patent applications in Canada and the United States.

All production procedures are conducted by experienced technicians following strict protocols under the constant supervision of the production managers. The members of the operations management team all hold university degrees in biology and have vast experience in marine biology.
